Asian Women’s Under-19 VolleyballAfter a display of total dominance in front of a crowd of more than 3,500, China overpowered Japan to win the final of the Asian Women’s Under-19 Volleyball Championship in Thailand on Monday 12 October. Both teams had progressed through the tournament without conceding a single game en-route to the final, but China showed its superior quality by winning 3-1 against its tough opponents. China, who enjoyed a distinct height advantage in the final, won the first game 25-20, but Japan recovered to stun the favourites with a 26-24 win after an intensely-played second game. The Chinese went on to win the third game 25-18 and, despite superb attacking plays from Japan’s Mizuho Ishida and Keiki Nishiyama, clinched the match with a 25-17 victory in the fourth game. Host Thailand failed to overcome Chinese Taipei in the 3rd-place playoff, eventually losing 3-1 in a thrilling contest. After losing the first game 25-16, Thailand came back to win the second game 25-22. But its recovery was short-lived as Chinese Taipei held on for a 25-20 win in game three before securing the match with a close 26-24 win in game four. Korea, who finished 3rd in Colombo two years ago, ended the tournament in a disappointing 5th place after comfortably beating Vietnam 3-0. The Koreans took the first two games 25-12 and 25-11 respectively and, despite a slight resurgence from Vietnam, closed the match out with a 25-21 win in game three. As awards were presented for individual performances during the tournament, China scooped most of the accolades with five winners: Chen Yao (best attacker), Fan Linlin (best server), Yan Ni (best blocker and most valuable player) and Wang Qian (best libero player). Elsewhere, Japan’s Miho Watanabe was named best setter and Wu Shu Fen from Chinese Taipei was named best scorer. Due to their success, China and Japan, along with Thailand as host country, are now eligible to take part in next year’s World Women’s Under-20 Volleyball Championship. c
